The question Library

AlgebraKiT offers a large number of randomised exercises that focus on procedural fluency, such as simplifying expressions, solving equations, finding derivatives, etc. This collection of predefined exercises is referred to as the library.

The exercises in the library are defined in a language-independent way. This means that the worked solutions, answers and hints are not stored in the exercise, but are generated by AlgebraKiT based on the audience.

Library structure

The library contains free randomised exercises, which are hierarchically arranged in folders.

The search bar at the top of the page can be used to search for specific keywords in an exercise title. The search applies to the current folder and below.

Exercises haveĀ attributes that identify properties of the exercise, such as the presence of fractions or brackets. Attributes also have an associated difficulty, indicated by color (see the above screenshot).

The exercises are ordered by their level of difficulty, based on the attributes. So the easiest exercises are on the top and the most difficult ones are at the bottom of the list.

You can preview an exercise by clicking the exercise name.

This preview window shows five random instances of the exercise. Click the play button to preview the worked solution or to solve this specific instance.

You can use the library in different ways. You can create exercise references that refer to the library exercises, you can create exercise arrangements that randomly select an exercise, or you can copy library exercises to your own course and modify them to your needs. You cannot modify the original exercises in the library.

Exercise references

Terminology

All your AlgebraKiT exercises are created and managed in your course. To be able to use a library exercise, you can create an exercise in your course that refers to this library exercise. This exercise reference also specifies the audience that defines the language and didactic behaviour of AlgebraKiT.

An exercise reference does not contain an exercise specification but merely points to another exercise. For the student, an exercise reference is indistinguishable from a regular exercise.

Create an exercise reference

There are two ways to create an exercise reference.

Create an exercise reference directly from the library

Go to the exercise you want to create an exercise reference for. Click on the menu in front of the exercise and click create single reference.

Select your course and choose the location where to place the exercise reference. You can overwrite the name of the library exercise name by entering a new value here in the Name field.

Create an exercise reference from your course

Go to the subject you want to create your exercise reference in.

At the top right corner, click NEW > Single Reference.

Edit the exercise generic settings where required.

Choose the library exercise where you want to refer to by clicking the home button after Exercise Script.

Navigate to the library exercise and click on the name of the exercise. The exercise is now listed.

Save your exercise reference.

Exercise arrangements

Terminology

An exercise arrangement is an extended form of an exercise reference. Instead of referring to a single exercise in the library, an exercise arrangement contains multiple references. The exercise that is presented to the student is randomly selected from these references. If the exercise that is referenced to is also randomised, then a random instance of that exercise is generated.

An exercise arrangement allows to generate a wide variation of randomised exercises. This allows you to assemble an exercise that covers e.g. multiple skills corresponding to a paragraph or chapter.

The references in an exercise arrangement can be organised into multiple levels of difficulty. This feature is used in the exercises of Stepwise Math, a free math practice website.

Create an exercise arrangement

You can only create an exercise arrangement directly from your course.

Go to the subject you want to create your exercise reference in.

At the top right corner, click NEW > Exercise Arrangement.

Edit the exercise generic settings where required.

Add exercises by either clicking the Add Exercises button or the Wizard button. With the first option, you create a manual selection of the library exercises you want to add. With the second option, you provide input by attributes you want the library exercises to contain, and AlgebraKiT will make the selection for you based on the attributes assigned.

Save your exercise arrangement.

Copy library exercises to your course

In case you want to adapt the exercise from the library, you need to copy it to your course.

You can only create a copy of a library exercise directly from the library.

Go to the exercise you want to create an exercise reference for. Click on the menu in front of the exercise and click create editable copy.

Select your course and choose the location where to place the exercise copy. You can overwrite the name of the library exercise name by entering a new value here in the Name field.
